The weather you should plan for
Lisbon has a temperate climate, with short winters and long, hot summers where temperatures reach highs of around 28 degrees Celsius. The warm afternoons invite a pleasant walk beside the river and something cold on one of the city's many terraces. Rain is normally more frequent between December and March, but the sun is usually never far away. Make the most of it and get ready to explore the city.
A city of twenty centuries
Lisbon is a city beside the river with twenty centuries of history, marked by diversity, from the narrow streets and pavements of traditional neighbourhoods such as Mouraria and Alfama to the modernity of the Parque das Nacoes and the busy avenues.
Renting a car in Lisbon is a good option. It puts Sintra, Cascais, the Setubal peninsula and the Alentejo within an easy day's drive, and it removes the timetable of buses and trains from your holiday.
Where we would drive
Start your route in the city with the Pombaline Baixa, and visit the Terreiro do Paco, one of the largest squares in Europe, with a beautiful view over the Tagus. On Rua Augusta you will find a great variety of shops, street vendors and street performers. When you reach the Rossio, one of the most beautiful squares in the city, take in the monuments and the fountains and stop for a drink in one of the many cafes nearby.
Then continue west in one of our cars to the Jeronimos Monastery, the Belem Cultural Centre and the Belem Tower. The Belem Tower was built in the age of the Discoveries and is covered in Manueline decoration symbolising the power of the king: elegant knots, naturalistic elements, armillary spheres and crosses of the Military Order of Christ. In 1983 UNESCO classified it as Cultural Heritage of All Humanity. And since you are passing through Belem, make sure you try one of the famous pasteis de Belem made in the original bakery.
After dark
For a night out, get to know the atmosphere of the evening gathering places of the Bairro Alto. Work your way through the bars, restaurants and shops selling design and fashion, and the tascas where you can hear fado, the musical style in which the Portuguese soul sings its fate. Next to the Bairro Alto, take the chance to visit the Chiado, with its theatres, bookshops and cafes such as A Brasileira, where the statue of the poet Fernando Pessoa is waiting for you.
Practical notes for the drive
- Parking in the Baixa, Chiado and Bairro Alto is difficult. Use an underground car park and walk the historic core.
- Every AUTOPORTRENT vehicle carries a Via Verde device for tolls in mainland Portugal, charged at 2,00€ per day plus the tolls you actually use.
- Unlimited kilometres in mainland Portugal are included, so a day trip costs you nothing extra in mileage.
- An automatic gearbox makes the hills and the hill starts considerably easier.
