Frequently asked questions

The answers below cover the questions we are asked most often at the counter and by email. They summarise the rental conditions; they do not replace the rental agreement or the Terms and Conditions.

Rates, reservation and payment

What is included in the rental price?
  • Compulsory third party motor liability insurance.
  • Unlimited kilometres in mainland Portugal.
  • Collision (CDW) and theft (TP) cover. The excess shown at the time of booking is the amount payable by you in the event of collision damage to the rented vehicle or its theft, under those covers. The excess can be reduced in full or in part by purchasing additional cover.
  • Roadside assistance.
  • VAT.
Can I see prices without booking?

Yes. You can use the reservation system to obtain a price without completing it. The reservation is only registered once payment has been made.

Can I add cover and extras online?

Additional cover and extras can be added online during the reservation process. You can also book online and add further cover or extras at the counter when you collect the vehicle.

Can I choose the vehicle model?

No. Reservations are made by vehicle group. The vehicles shown on the website may be replaced by equivalent models.

How do I know my reservation is confirmed?

All reservations are subject to confirmation by AUTOPORTRENT. On the last step of the reservation, after payment, you receive an email with the number and details of your booking. Keep that email: it is your voucher when you collect the vehicle. Confirmation emails are sent every day between 09:30 and 17:30.

Can I cancel my reservation?

Yes. If you cancel up to 48 hours before the start date and time of your rental, you are entitled to a refund of the amount paid.

Am I refunded if I cancel?

If you cancel up to 48 hours before the start date and time of your rental, you are entitled to a refund of the amount paid. If you cancel less than 48 hours before, you are not entitled to any refund.

What counts as a No Show reservation?

The following situations are treated as No Show reservations:

  • Not collecting the vehicle at the date, time and place set out in the reservation.
  • Not presenting the documents required to collect the vehicle.
  • Not presenting your credit card, as main driver, with funds available for the security deposit.

In every situation treated as a No Show there is no entitlement to a refund.

How can I pay for the rental?

Most credit and debit cards are accepted, including American Express, Diners, Mastercard and Visa, as well as cash in euros. The security deposit must be made exclusively with your credit card.

Can I use something other than a credit card for the deposit?

No. Virtual, prepaid and top-up cards are also not accepted for the security deposit.

Can I use someone else's credit card?

No.

Can I use a debit card?

Debit cards are accepted to pay the rental costs, but not for the security deposit.

Pick-up and return

Which documents do I need to collect the vehicle?

In addition to the reservation voucher, you must present:

  • EU citizens: driving licence and citizen card or passport.
  • Non-EU citizens: driving licence and passport.

All documents must be originals. Copies are not accepted.

If I forget one of the documents, can I still collect the vehicle?

No. Presenting your original documentation is mandatory in order to collect the vehicle.

Do I need my credit card to collect the vehicle?

Yes. Your credit card must be presented physically. We use it to request an authorisation and hold the amount of the security deposit, without taking any money. Your available credit is reduced by the deposit amount for the duration of the rental agreement. After the vehicle is returned, provided there are no extra or outstanding amounts and once our services have checked it, the hold is released. Virtual, top-up and prepaid cards are not accepted for the security deposit.

How do I extend the rental period?

You can extend your agreement in person at an AUTOPORTRENT counter, or by phone, following the instructions you are given. AUTOPORTRENT may refuse an extension or any other change to the rental agreement.

Do I need to return the vehicle with a full tank?

The vehicle must be returned with the same amount of fuel it had at collection. If it is not, the missing fuel or battery charge is billed together with a 15€ refuelling service fee.

Drivers and driving

Who can drive the rented vehicle?

Only the drivers expressly named in the rental agreement may drive the rented vehicle.

What is the minimum driving age?

The minimum age to drive the rented vehicle is 21. A daily charge applies if the driver is under 24.

What is the maximum driving age?

The maximum age to drive the rented vehicle is 75.

Can I drive outside Portugal?

AUTOPORTRENT may authorise driving the vehicle in mainland Spain. Before crossing the border you must have express authorisation from AUTOPORTRENT recorded in the rental agreement and pay the CROSS BORDER PT-ES extra. Unauthorised use of the vehicle outside Portugal is a breach of contract and carries the associated legal consequences, as well as voiding the cover you have purchased.

Driving licence: what are the requirements?

Your driving licence must have been held for a minimum of two years from the date of issue.

Can I add other drivers to the agreement?

Other drivers can be added to the rental agreement when the vehicle is collected. The original documentation of each driver must be presented. An extra fee is charged for each additional driver.

Do I need an international driving licence?

Only if your driving licence is not valid in Portugal. An international driving licence is only valid when accompanied by the national licence.

Additional cover and extras

Can the excess be partially reduced?

Yes. Please see the RCDW extra in the Terms and Conditions and during the reservation process.

Can the excess be reduced to zero?

Yes, but not on every group. See the SCDW extra in the Terms and Conditions and during the reservation process.

Can I take cover for glass and tyres?

Yes. Please see the WDW extra in the Terms and Conditions and during the reservation process. WDW is only valid together with RCDW or SCDW.

Fines and tolls

What happens if I get a fine?

As the holder of the rental agreement you are responsible for paying all traffic offences. If you do not, the responsible authority issues a notification in the name of AUTOPORTRENT, as owner of the vehicle. On receiving such a notification for an offence committed during the rental period, we identify the driver to the authority so that a new notification can be issued in your name as holder of the agreement. From that point the matter is handled directly between you and the authority.

Who pays the tolls?

As holder of the rental agreement, the customer is responsible for paying all tolls. Every rental vehicle carries a device that can be used to pay tolls in mainland Portugal. A compulsory service fee of 2,00€ per day, VAT included, is charged for the E-Toll Via Verde service, and toll usage is charged separately to your credit card at the end of the rental.

These answers summarise our rental conditions. For the complete detail, including all excess amounts, extras and charges, please read the Terms and Conditions.
